The deserts of the American Southwest speak to me in a powerful way. I have a greater understanding of why the Desert Fathers went to similar lonely arid places to seek God. In this harsh environment one becomes attuned to beauty, to silence and to the quiet voice which speaks words of hope. The stark simplicity of shape, form and color to be found in these places is often stunning as are the signs of life in this dry land. From a distance, the deserts look empty but if you will immerse yourself you will find more than you ever imagined and much more than is visible on the surface.
