Sadly, we rarely notice the wonder that surrounds us because it has become common place. That is one of the things I love about travel. It takes us out of what's normal and presents us with something completely different. Surprisingly, when we return home we then see it again with new eyes. When I had the opportunity to spend a week in Iceland, I made it a priority to get up into the Highlands to experience the area's incredible geology. This volcanic area filled with lava, rhyolite, sulfur, iron and so many other rocks and minerals creates a kaleidoscope of color. I created this image while standing on top of a mountain looking down at this section of land with a long lens. To give you a sense of perspective, the dark rock sticking up near the middle is approximately 25 feet high. In the upper left you'll see snow melting into a stream. The almost neon green color is moss which grows in the most unexpected of places in Iceland. This creates volcanos and geothermal areas throughout the island. Because of this, the world feels very alive here. As I hiked past this geothermal vent in the highlands it felt like I had found where the earth breathes. You could hear the steam pouring out through the rock and feel its warmth. All of this creates a different sense of understanding and connection with our world. Throughout so much of the country you can hear the sound of falling water. It is delightful and one of the most healing sounds on the planet. It often feels like something out of a dream, too fantastical to be real. On this morning deep in the highlands, I don't think I would have been any more surprised if dwarves or hobbits passed through the scene. Here, geothermal activity fills the air with steam as the mineral laden pool below spills into a stream both warming and nourishing the grazing sheep. Brennisteinsalda with its distinctive horn. On its side is a lava field that from this angle looks like a lizard peering down on Landmannalaugar in the valley below. The storm clouds were letting go as I made this photograph, filling the air with heavy rain. The rain softened this image giving it an extra sense of unreality and mystery. What had previously appeared as black and lifeless is revealed to be bubbling with fresh lava just under the surface. I spent hours in the darkness watching this incredible show as new land was born. About two miles offshore is a natural strip of land that stops the large waves of the sea from getting any closer. As a result, the water is often still and provides a wonderful reflection of the sky above. In this photo you can just see that strip of land. It reveals the horizon without being too distracting from this dreamy scene. There, the warmer water and crashing waves broke large pieces off it. One of these drifted back to shore and continued to be shaped by the restless sea until it looked like a large crystal boot. There was a sad and almost heavy feeling to this place. Then a break in the clouds allowed the sun to briefly shine. It illuminated the vibrant green moss and revealed a small stream leading out and away from these dark lands. Around their small wooden houses, they built thick walls of stone which added additional protection from the harsh environment. They also covered their roofs in thick turf and grasses which in some ways makes them feel a little like the homes of hobbits. There was so much going on. This was a landscape like none I had ever experienced before. Before leaving the capital city of Reykjavik, I walked down to the Sun Voyager sculpture which overlooks the harbor. As the predawn light illuminated the sky, it looked ready to bravely sail into this new day of adventure. They are everywhere. The Icelandic word for waterfall is "foss" and I often think that the country should be renamed "Fossland". Along with the waterfalls, there is moss growing all over. It grows on the lava fields, on areas of seemingly barren desert, and alongside waterfalls like this one. I was intrigued at how it began as one stream, hit a rock where it divided into multiple trails of water. Yet as I followed the fall of that stream, the divided water once again came together before reaching the bottom. As I view our world and our tendency to divide, my hope is that we too will move beyond that which has divided us and return to all we share in common. As the light passed through the clouds it lit certain areas leaving other in shadow. This created a sense of drama and even foreboding. It was a beautiful mix of tranquility and danger; that is very much how life feels at times. It is a 2,800' volcano that is still active. There are steam vents and hot springs on several sides. The many colors come from sulfur, iron, mosses, hardened lava, and other minerals. It almost should be called "Rainbow Mountain," as I've never seen a mountain more colorful than this one. It was built in the traditional adobe style. Clay, sand, straw, and water are mixed together creating a thick mud which is used to coat the buildings. Each year the church must be replastered to maintain the building's integrity.In this photo you'll see a statue of Saint Francis, a man whose life has had reverberations for centuries and whose key messages are surprisingly relevant today. I'm always challenged on multiple levels each time I read one of the many biographies written about him. It cuts deeply into the earth creating a chasm that would have been impossible to cross until engineers built this amazing bridge. On this evening there was a spectacular sunset with falling rain on the mountains to the east. This image has such incredible detail that when viewed in a large print, every rivet of the bridge and every stone can be clearly seen. America has become a nation with two almost diametrically opposed cultures and world views rowing in opposite directions. The greatest challenge that our nation faces today is in finding ways to overcome this divide, to find common ground. Such change never starts with someone else, instead it always begins with myself and with my community. Each of us must find ways to build relationships across the divide. We don't have to agree on politics but we do have to agree on each other's humanity, to see the good that exists in the other, to trust the other's intentions even if we don't understand them. This is a hard path. It's always much easier to get angry, to hate and to separate, yet if we continue down the path of division, the results will not be good. It is definitely one of the largest buildings in the city. I shot this just after arriving from Denver in my very jet-lagged state. The warm pre-dawn light was beginning to light the skies behind it as I passed by and so I felt as if I had to stop and capture a shot of this impressive building that causes the inhabitants of the city to lift their eyes skyward. It took me a few tries and a number of damp lens cloths but was just so much fun to be here and see this great view while hearing the amazingly deep roar of the falls. One of the places I've seen time and time again in photographs is Punchbowl Falls in the Columbia River Gorge of Oregon. Because it has become something of an icon I almost didn't visit it, especially as the weather was not the overcast and rain that was forecast but sunny skies which generally aren't good for photographing waterfalls. For some reason I decided to at least go and have a look. The scene turned out to be even more beautiful than I expected with mist rising over the falls illuminated by the sun. Thanks to my friend +Koveh Tavakkol's suggestion I brought my wading boots with me and was able to get this and several other photos of the falls. We catch a glimpse of something unexpected which reveals that our certainties are actually actually illusions. On this stormy morning I watched as the sun broke through a crack in the clouds lighting a sandstone bluff with its intense orange light. Normally this is the time when one sees rainbows in the sky but today I found one on the side of hill. This rainbow had either lost its way or had decided to give us a more permanent presence showing that it was not merely an ethereal effect in the air but something more substantial than I had been led to believe. This is a very special time as the clouds hang over the dramatic peaks and waterfalls appear all over the place. This image is of the Court of the Patriarchs with a waterfall appearing in the distance. The rain was coming down hard so I held an umbrella over the camera. I arrived just moments before sunset after a long drive from Moab. I had almost no time at all to compose any shots before the drama of the storm lighting was gone. Photos I had seen of this place in the past included a hoodoo which was no longer there. I realized that this big rock in the foreground was once that impressive, almost iconic hoodoo. These amazing rock formations that took so long to form are so delicate that they can easily vanish almost overnight. There is always a sense of great beauty when delicate things grow in harsh places. I suppose that is partially what art is born of. This artistic bouquet growing through the sandstone is one of my favorite images from this trip and one which I would like to hang on my wall. It reminds me that we too are called to be works of art, living lives of delicate beauty in even the most difficult of circumstances. There was nothing between me and the valley floor 3,000 feet below. It was so beautiful and also terrifying. Yet at the same time there was also a deep sense of freedom from those things that normally weigh us down. I'm not usually a fan of light pollution but in this case it worked in my favor. The lights of Moab lit the sky behind the rock on the right and the headlights of several vehicles driving down the road lit Balanced Rock for a few seconds to help it stand out against the stars. I was told that it was previously covered in gold but I think the patterns of the actual stone work must be even more beautiful. I decided I wanted to get a couple of night images of the beautiful Barbican area with its boats in harbor and beautiful old buildings. This image is only a couple of hundred yards from where the pilgrims departed on the Mayflower in 1620. On this evening the sky was a wonderful dark blue which contrasted well with the warm lights and the colorful boats. I was in the UK with my wife and son visiting her family. On this evening 9 of us drove out to Rame's Head, Cornwall where we had an amazing view overlooking the ocean as the giant full moon rose over Plymouth Sound and shimmered on the surrounding clouds. It is a small crack in the earth about 150 feet deep and in places only 10-20 feet wide. At its base a small stream winds its way through the towering rock. In this location deep within is a small beach with colorful river stones. There aren't many beaches like this in the world. It is almost like you are at the entrance of a place of incredible wonder and can't wait to get around the corner. It beckons you onward on your journey through the canyon. The red rock next to the white water, yellow cottonwood tree and orange sandstone wall create this wonderful feast of color for the eyes while the lines are just perfect. This was a special spot and I spent about an hour here enjoying the beauty while eating lunch. This stream creates a beautiful little oasis with lots of vegetation including large cottonwood trees which turn a brilliant yellow during the autumn months. Don't ask where I shot this and I promise I won't tell. ;-) What I really liked about this hoodoo is the way that it appears to be twisting around perhaps to look over its shoulder. I shot this image into the sun and used the hoodoo top to block the sun itself. I've heard everyone talk about it and seen the photos. It is a place filled with varied texture and lighting creating a photographer's paradise. Although this sandstone is really all just one color the higher up in the canyon you look, the brighter it is and the further down you go the darker the stone is, creating these wonderful variations which add a painterly feel to everything. These sandstone waves particularly revealed these contrasts. Naked walls of dry stone spout stunning waterfalls while the trees below reach to the sky with their fresh green leaves. All the earth seems to be celebrating spring as if it was a creation made anew. It is known as Saint Martin's Cross and though not more than a few hundred years old, it is a reflection of the ancient Celtic crosses which were found across much of the Celtic world. Typically these crosses had pictorial scenes from Scripture on one side and scenes from nature on the other side expressing the belief that God could be known through both and understanding of the written word and the natural world he created. At the point of connection the division reminded me of a hill and then as I looked more closely I could see the tracks of a small mouse who had climbed that hill and then headed off into the dune. This idea of contrasting similarity really resonates with me. It is interesting to see these two colors of sandstone sharply divided from each other. Then there appears to be a second rift between the top and the bottom which crosses the color boundary. Finally, there is a deep crack which runs from top to bottom which affects all the previous divisions. It so reminds me of the way we isolate ourselves into groups of "us" and "them" unaware of the bigger problems that affect us all. This is known as "The Subway" and has been shot thousands of times. On this day I was among seven other photographers, four others at the top and three others around the corner. The warm lighting streaming in from a reflected sandstone wall at the far end of the tunnel contrasted with the dark, almost blue tonality of the inner portion creates a feel that it is hard to find almost anywhere else. Areas like this where there are very small hoodoos are often called "egg farms" as they seem like baby hoodoos and look almost like eggs. It was a very cool place. Again, the rain was falling hard and the wind was blowing towards me from the mountain. I used a clear shower cap to cover the lens while I composed and then quickly took it off to take my shots. Within 1 second, the lens would be covered in water spots. Ugh! This was probably my favorite image from the trip to Scotland, but upon closer inspection I found significant water streaks on the image. If you are interested in larger sizes of this image, let me know and I can try, but it will take a bit of work to deal with the areas blurred by the water. Everything was perfect except for the fact that we were there off season and so work was being done on the castle. Since this was my only opportunity to shoot this castle in good light, I broke my normal approach and shot it with the distractions and then removed a person and a vehicle using Photoshop. Despite the removal of those, this is a photo which contains a great amount of detail and will look stunning as a panoramic print. I look forward to displaying it later this year in Estes Park's Scottish festival.
